HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — East Broad Top railroad celebrated a "major" milestone on Tuesday as workers completed the installation on the first section of track for southward expansion.
The section of track has been dormant in that direction since the railroad ceased coal-hauling operations in 1956.
The East Broad Top Foundation is working on expanding the railroad's operating mainline, nine miles south from its headquarters, to the boroughs of Three Springs and Saltillo.
Work includes restoring the original tracks that have been reclaimed by nature for nearly 70 years.
Organizers say there is no precise timeline for the service to resume, as there is no specific date for completion of the project.
